The Bundessieger-Zuhtschau (BSZS) 2007 is behind us now. If you love German Shepherds and have never been to one, make a point of going to this show in Germany – perhaps next year? I feel very fortunate to have been able to see these top dogs and their progeny for myself this year! I will try to share my impressions on this page.

As usual, we spent Friday watching the bitework, mainly focusing on the males. It was rather cold (perfect for the dogs), and it was raining steadily in the afternoon. It seems physically impossible to watch every single dog perform, and I know I missed some even though I was basically glued to

my seat from 8 am till 5 pm. I’ve gotten the impression that the helpers were rather “soft” in many cases, compared to tougher testing last year. Nevertheless, 47 males failed the bitework out of 377 entered (45 were pulled). I would like to mention some dogs that especially impressed me with their performances at this show: V147 Javir vom Talka Marda, V6 Bazi von der Urbecke, EZ Karat’s Ulk, and V69 Campino vom großen Schönberg were absolutely the best. EZ Zeckel von der Mäusespitz, V153 Ajax vom Röhnsaler Bach, EZ Jack von Alcudia were awesome. The following dogs are marked as “nice!” in my catalog as well:

Like I said, I did not see every single dog’s performance, so I’m sure there were others worth mentioning as well.

On Saturday the weather was very nice, except for one shower in the morning, during the progeny groups. I especially liked the uniformity in size and excellent color of Vegas, Idol, and Zamp, and I couldn’t wait to for the Youth and Young Dog groups to start. My main focus was on the18-24 male class, as I was watching Victor vom Zellwaldrand, of course, who placed an awesome SG 21. I was very pleased with the first dog in this class, SG1 Godalis Tino. Loved his correct medium size, non-exaggerated color, powerful head, and excellent structure. The second dog, SG2 Sony vom Heinrichplatz is an exceptionally powerfully built male, but of correct size as well. The third dog, SG3 Tyson vom Köttersbusch looked absolutely stunning, with very powerful head, perfect structure and movement, but it was still a surprise to see him placed as high as he was in this class – he is a very, very large dog. SG1 and SG3 were Quenn sons. I also liked the SG4 dog, Tuareg von Bad-Boll – medium sized and very nicely pigmented ambassador for Ursus bloodline. To tell you the truth, I liked a lot of dogs in the first ring in this class – very high quality class, in my opinion.

Absolutely loved the SG1 female, Ronja vom Haus Burow, in 18-24 class. Very nicely colored and pigmented dog with awesome movement. Already has Schutzhund title, and is of perfect type. In Youth Class males, it was surprising, but very pleasing to see a Kirschental dog to win! Well done. The first 5 dogs in this class were Ursus free.

In order to assess the producing qualities of our top males, lets take a look at the top 25 dogs in Young Dog and Youth classes. In Young Dog classes Quenn and Zamp are absolut leaders by siring 9 and 8 dogs respectively. In Youth group, Vegas was unbitable - 10 dogs - not bad for just the first 6 months of being able to breed (Vegas is not old enough to have any offspring in the Young Dog classes yet). Odin and Zamp follow Vegas with 5 dogs each.

Finally I get to talk about what happened on Sunday. The judging of working class males was full of action and excitement, although I know it left quite a few people unhappy. First of all, it was absolutely thrilling to see 4 working line dogs in the first ring, which means they made V60s and V70s! As I was sitting in the stands, I could hear that I wasn’t the only one excited. The support, or disapproval, for that matter, of the crowd of every single event in the stadium was so very vocal and always right. I have to admit that I saw better structured working line dogs in my life, but I hope that these high placings will encourage other working line breeders and owners to participate in the Sieger Show next year!

Another exciting thing about the judging in this class was that it really mattered how each dog performed in the fast gaiting and off-leash. If the dog galloped or didn’t heel, it was moved 2-5 spots back, sorry! This is how Odin, who was originally placed 5th slipped back to VA8. And one of the working line dogs that was initially placed ahead of the rest of them, was moved to the very end of the group – didn’t heel well. Also due to excellent gating performance during the entire ring time, a sable Timo son, V28 Arex vom Herbramer-Wald, moved up like 20 positions?!

What I also liked was that when doing fast and off-leash rounds in groups of five, the dogs were separated by the judge’s helper well enough to prevent them from running in one tight little crowd, stepping on each other.

Overall, it was a very exciting and successful show for many, Congratulations! and I cannot wait for the Sieger Show 2008!
